Dr. Hamman is the Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics. He was educated at Michigan State University where he received his B.S. in Biochemestry (1968). Dr. Hamman attended Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH (M.D.)(1972), and completed a medicine internship at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA (1972-73).

Dr. Hamman worked at the Phoenix Epidemiology and Field Studies Branch of the NIH, NIDDK studying diabetes epidemiology in Native Americans, and then completed an M.P.H., Preventive Medicine Residency and Dr.P.H at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health (1978).

He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics.
