Our Goal

Imagine a world where everyone leads a healthy, productive and vital life. Researchers at the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center are doing more than visualizing such a world. They are working to discover factors associated with disease to determine which factors can be changed, and detect disease at its earliest, most curable stages.

Our mission at the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics is to increase understanding of health, illness and the outcomes of medical care and how these areas relate to social, biological and environmental risk factors in individuals and communities.

Preventive Medicine and Biometrics is one of the largest basic sciences departments in the School of Medicine. We are linked to other departments within the School of Medicine, the Health Sciences Center and downtown Denver campuses, the state and local health departments and health care organizations throughout the region.

Our work focuses on disease prevention, health promotion and public health. Through our education programs, we are training the physicians, public health workers, scientists and researchers who are unlocking the secrets of health and well being.

How you can make a difference

Your contributions to the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics will have vital effect on our work. Donations to the Preventive Medicine and Biometrics Education/Scholarship Fund are earmarked for student tuition, improved equipment and teaching tools as well as the addition of faculty who are dedicated to training scientists for the future.

Dollars for the Preventive Medicine and Biometrics Research Fund are targeted for innovative and exciting research. Federal funding for projects is generally awarded to projects with new ideas and preliminary data. Your donations to the Research Fund will allow investigators to conduct preliminary studies to test their ideas prior to obtaining federal funds.

Money directed toward the Preventive Medicine and Biometrics Endowment Fund will be used to establish named professorships and chairs for the department. Endowed chars are used to recruit and retain the best faculty. These faculty are the heart of an academic program and provide leadership in both research and teaching. Endowed faculty positions also underscore the importance of a particular discipline, giving it national as well as international recognition. This recognition helps attract gifted students and scientists to the area of endeavor and furthers investigation and discovery.
